M-Term: Interning for Council Member Abbie Kamin- Thursday- The Worst Cupcake I’ve Ever Had

Thursday- The Worst Cupcake I’ve Ever Had

Today was much more focused on office work than the past days have, which is actually kind of nice since it feels like I am helping. I got to the office way too early, before anyone else, which was kind of confusing and I overthought if I had missed a memo saying that people were not coming to the office today, but it ended up being fine and everyone eventually showed up. It was raining really heavy, which was the reason they were not there at the time they usually are. A little bit later, I met Jenna, the other UofH intern, who was shocked that I am still in high school and think that this internship is amazing. Kate came in shortly after to assign me some work. I was assigned to do research on Planned Parenthood and write a brief on my findings. This is because I attended the meeting with CM Kamin and Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast earlier this week, and they are predicting people asking questions about planned parenthood after CM Kamin announced her funding Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast at Public Session on Tuesday. I did research on what services Planned Parenthood offers, which of those services Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast offers, and I did research on maternal mortality rates in Texas and Harris County. Jenna then taught me about the voicemail log, and we listened to a voicemail and put it in the log, which is one of her jobs as an intern. I then went with Kate and Cole to a infrastructure meeting with CM Kamin, where they presented their research to her. It was so interesting where her mind goes and what questions she asks after each proposal, she was talking about things that I was not thinking about but it is actually super important to keep them in mind doing this work. After the meeting we went back to the office, where we learned of some cupcakes in the office. Kate and I went to get the cupcakes but when she saw them she immediately denied the offer for a cupcake. She said that I should take one because they are the worst cupcakes, and it is a sort of joke in the office about how bad the cupcakes are, it was a terrible cupcake. I then had lunch, and when I came back I worked on more office work for the rest of the day. I worked more on the planned parenthood brief, and then I was sent an email that CM Kamin received about BARC, the city funded animal shelter. The sender had a bunch of concerns about the shelter, so I was assigned to do research into the programs the email mentioned, and write about what I thought of the email as well. I was also given a city email today! No one thought I would get one since I am only an intern for two weeks, but somehow they made one for me anyways, it is very cool because now I have a .gov email address which makes me feel very official. If I intern over the summer than this email will come in handy then as well, so its not for nothing! Friday is a virtual day, so I was also instructed on what to do tomorrow as well, which will be in tomorrow’s blog. So far I am really loving this internship, and I am beyond grateful that the school and Council Member Kamin let me have this opportunity. The only picture I took today was of the rain from in the intern office, which is pictured below.
